Website Development: A Gateway to Small Business Marketing Success – A Case Study

From our previous blog posts, you’ve probably read about how important having a website is to business success through content design and increased sales. Small businesses today can’t effectively grow without an engaging and powerful online presence; There is no reason businesses should not pursue a digital strategy since it comes at a minimal cost compared to other investments.

A website is the main gateway to consumers for a successful marketing strategy.

An ideal website for your small business helps control the digital narrative of your company. This includes highlighting the core values, vision, and mission of your organization with the promotion of your products and services. It can help you differentiate from competitors and the collect website activity data that can help you identify the strengths and weaknesses for future growth.

Even with these benefits and values, it’s still perplexing why many small businesses still choose not to use this simple marketing channel to make themselves known to the world. Consider these stats (compiled in January 2019[1]):

  • Less than two-thirds (64%) of small businesses have a website
  • Among those without a website, only 58% plan to build one this year
  • Less than a quarter (23%) of small business websites get updated each year
  • Approximately 30% of small businesses with Internet presence generate over 25% of their revenue online
  • About half (50%) of online sales are lost when visitors can’t find content
  • Small businesses cite costs, industry irrelevance and social media as reasons for not using website

While we can all agree that there are no guarantees in the business world, we must still put in the effort and actions required to obtain the results we want, otherwise success will always be elusive. The question becomes: How can small businesses go beyond “traditional” marketing and achieve success through website building? Here’s an interesting case study compiled by Business Development Canada[2]:

“TAL Products has been a supplier of food, health and foodservice products for over 45 years, but the business hasn’t been able to translate its success into online popularity. By 2013, TAL’s six-year-old website had only less than 1,000 visits per year – unimaginable for a business that looks to succeed in today’s digital world.

Faced with the challenge of growing its digital presence and scale, TAL embarked on a journey to completely transform its online footprint, starting with an analysis of its digital assets and assessment of TAL’s business requirements to eventually build a brand new e-commerce website.

After devising a web strategy and selecting the ideal vendor, TAL managed to completely “renovate” its online presence, and with the help from BDC, the business developed an integrated marketing strategy roadmap to catch the attention of more customers. Along the way, TAL supplemented its new website with popular strategies such as content marketing, search engine optimization, and paid media tactics.

In the end, TAL was able to grow its online traffic exponentially (over 1,000 visits PER MONTH) and boost sales revenue by 450% year over year. The company even secured multiple high-profile clients who would otherwise not be reachable. The executive team at TAL was extremely impressed with these results and stressed that this was only the beginning of their success, as projects like this could have a long-lasting effect on the business.”

The above case study demonstrates the value and opportunities that developing a website could have on a business. The benefits are evident and far outweigh the risks and amount of costs involved.

Like TAL, there are currently many Canadian businesses that could use web development as a springboard to reach their goals. How about your business? Have you taken the necessary steps to enhance your business’ digital presence?
