The Importance of IT Cybersecurity

Security. It’s something we all strive to maintain whether at home or in a professional setting. A vital part of running a small business is to keep your assets safe. For years, all businesses – regardless of size – employ some form of security system to keep a watchful eye on their premises and physical property. The same must be done for those assets that are non-physical.

Today’s business applications are supported by a company’s IT infrastructure. Your IT network is what connects you to your customers and represents the backbone of your small business. It can contain every little detail about products, personnel, and overall strategy, and supports the underlying value of your business. Criminals know how much we rely on digital assets now and see the financial value of stealing them. This puts your digital assets continuously at risk which can affect your bottom line.

According to an international survey of 355 organizations by Accenture in their annual Cost of Cybercrime report, “the price of security incidents in organizations in 11 countries jumped by an average of 12 per cent [in 2018]” [1].

This is in response to the average company surveyed experiencing “145 security breaches (not all of which may have involved data exfiltration)” in the same year, marking an 11% increase from the year before.

Amongst the 25 Canadian companies surveyed, the average cost of security breaches was “US $9.25 million” which corresponded to an average of “75 cyber attacks” in the year.

What’s more interesting, is that these data breaches are not just targeting the systems alone but are “increasingly using very targeted spear phishing and social engineering campaigns to go after specific people in organizations” [1]. The way to combat these tactics is an increased understanding in updating procedures and technology to protect staff.

Make sure you take the time to review your current IT security procedures and see if your staff understand the potential dangers of SPAM emails and phishing tactics! Managed IT Services often provide security system expertise and software that can help your small business adapt to the new cyber threats of the day. They take the hassle out of costly security management by handling it for you, often at a lower price point. Take a look at the options available to you because the alternative may cost you more than you think.

If you are thinking of making a change in how your IT services work for you, remember:

A strong IT infrastructure is the backbone of a growing business.
